Jeana’s ARG Challenge

Well, Scott somehow convinced me to write a blog entry, so here it goes: I officially completed my first adventure race yesterday and I am HOOKED! My friend, Jamie and I (aka: Team AOKE – the first initials of all of our daughters) signed up for the Adventure Race Girl Challenge expecting to canoe, bike, run and navigate through this 3-6 hour race. Well, the week before the race, a ton of rain fell and the day before the race the rowing portion got cancelled.

Team AOKE before the race

So, we started off the race with a team challenge where they tied our shoes together and we had to run up a hill to pick up our “3rd teammate.” When we got to the top, we were given an egg that they called the “Fragile Male.” We were instructed to carry him (ours was named Homer) with us on the entire race and we would get a 10 minute penalty if he broke.

So, we ran back down the hill, got the string that connected our shoes cut, and one of us had to ride Jamie’s bike while the other one ran. I had a lot of adrenaline to start, so I ran while Jamie rode. We had 3 checkpoints that we had to make our way to in order to get our other bike. So we switched off running and biking until we got my bike and then we had to make our way to 6 more checkpoints using a map and going in whatever order we wanted.

We missed the first CP we were heading to (#7), got CP6 and headed to CP4. The hill leading to CP 4 was a killer. We didn’t read the clue very good for that one, so we spent plenty of time on the top of this huge hill wasting time until some other teams came along and led us to the checkpoint. Oh well.

After spending an hour making poor decisions to get to CP 5, we finally got it and finished up 7, 8 and 9 before heading back into the transition area to trade in our bikes for new maps. When we got there, we said a quick hello to our families, got our new maps and headed out on foot for our trekking portion.

Jeana and Jamie plotting their course for the navigation leg

A short ways into our trekking portion, Jamie noticed that some fluid was coming from Homer. There was a tiny hole in him but that white membrane was still intact, so he wasn’t gushing fluid – just had a slow leak. Luckily when we got back they didn’t consider him broken, so we didn’t get the 10 minute penalty.

Since we could hit the CP’s in any order, we didn’t see people very often, so we had no idea what our standing was. Because of how long it was taking us, we figured we must be in the back of the pack. So, after hitting CP’s 10 and 11 easily, we totally screwed up on our way to 12 and had to backtrack a mile. We got it, got 13 and headed back in. When, we got in, Scott said, I think you came in 9th so we went and checked it out and sure enough… WE CAME IN 9TH!!! Not bad for not having a clue what we were doing. It took us just over 4 hours.

It was so fun to have our families there to see us come in. Audrey actually looks a lot happier than she really was in this picture. A: she was freaking out about the flies around her and B: she had no desire to touch me since I was so dirty.

Check out our muddy legs. It rained for about 10 or so minutes so the mud was just flying up all over us while we were mountain biking.

KingPin 4

Jeana and I received some generous gifts for our birthdays so we decided to buy a bike rack for the Jeep. This purchase is timely because Jeana is doing her adventure race this weekend and needs a way to transport her bike (and her friend’s bike too) to the race.

We bought a Yakima KingPin 4 which, as you might guess from the number, carries 4 bikes. The arms fold down, as shown in the picture, if you need to park it a tight space when the rack is attached. The vertical part tilts away from the back of the Jeep so that we can still open the tail gate.

I loaded on Jeana’s bike just to see what it looks like. The bike sits much higher than I expected, and I suppose her seat would be peppered with bugs since it is raised above the top of the Jeep. The rear wheel is extending beyond the driver’s side of the Jeep because her bike has an angled tubing just below the stem of the seat.

Jeana went riding this morning (well, right now as I’m posting this) with her friend/teammate, so the rack is already being put to good use.

Thanks to those in our families who made this gift possible!

Happy Father’s Day to Me

My family sent me on a treasure hunt this morning for father’s day. This has become the tradition in our family. Two years ago, Jeana made clues which where in the shape of neck ties. Last year, she made clues of golf bags. This year she made caribeaners for the clues-I loved them.

At the end of my treasure hunt I found a new 4-person tent! Now we can go camping (if the temperatures aren’t blistering hot) for the 4th of July at Enchanted Rock. I was so excited that I had to setup the tent in our play room to try it out. I laid out our sleeping bags to see how tight we’d be with Audrey and Kate. Their sleeping bags are wider than ours! That’s okay though because they won’t take up that much space in reality.

Climbing at Gus Fruh

Last night we finally decided to find some climbing in Austin. We opened our Austin Rock book and found that Gus Fruh park was close. When we got there, we had to cross over a stream that was waist deep in the middle. Jeana had Kate in a backpack (shown below) and I was holding Audrey and trying to keep my backpack (with the rope in it) above the water. Half-way across I had to hoist Audrey up on my shoulders so I could keep the backpack from getting wet. There were a bunch of people swimming around and I know they were just thinking, “Ten bucks says he trips and drops her in the water!”

We found a route called Wyoming Women which is just to the left of where I’m positioned in the picture below. That route didn’t have any bolts but the route just to the right, Heir Apparent, did have bolts. Just above my helmet and a little to the right is the first bolt. The first bolt was probably about 10 feet from the ground – high enough to make me nervous to fall.

It was getting late in the evening (for the girls’ schedule) so we decided not to get out the rope and our harnesses. The girls were a little restless and we didn’t feel completely safe attempting a climb at that moment.

Audrey hiding from the mosquitoes

Audrey quickly got introduced to mosquitoes and was generous in our vocal outburst of pain and fright. She spent the rest of the night wrapped in a blanket and hidden in my cap to avoid any more encounters with what she regarded as a ruthless beast.

Kate watching us climb at Gus Fruh

Kate only tipped over once in her backpack. She occasionally got upset with the pestering insects but for the most part did pretty good sitting there.

Jeana bouldering on Wyoming Women

Jeana also bouldered up on Wyoming Women/Heir Apparent, but she didn’t want to take too many risks because Audrey and Kate weren’t completely happy and cooperating by the time she got her turn to climb.

Finding the climb and wading a stream gave us an adventurous night. I need a little more adventure in my life. Oh, and I need a little more climbing too.

Jeana’s Girl Weekend

Jeana’s friend, Missy, called Jeana and told her that she was a finalist for a contest for a radio station here in Austin. The contest provided the finalist a get-away with a friend for a girls weekend. Missy wanted Jeana to go with her for the weekend of extreme sport training. Here are some pictures from their weekend.

Jeana had perma-grin out on the water because she was having such a good time. The biggest challenge for her was getting back into the wake.

Uh, Jeana, where did you go!

Girls Weekend 04

I was most proud of Jeana for trying motor cross. I didn’t think she would ever ride a motor bike, but the pictures tell all. She was even shown the ropes by Hans, who was competing for a national championship in motor cross. Jeana is the rider in red, and in the picture below is receiving a lesson in using the brakes from Buffy, Hans’ wife.

Doesn’t Jeana look so cool? She said wearing all the protective gear was really hot. It was a great day for wake boarding, but I don’t know if the same could be said for motor cross because of the hot clothing they had to wear.

Girls Weekend 09

The girls weekend was at the Texas Ski Ranch, which is right off I-35 near New Braunfels (between Austin and San Antonio). I notice the big lake and the ski jumps out in the water all the time when we’re driving back from San Antonio. They also have rock climbing there, so maybe we’ll stop there in the future!
