Jeana and I received some generous gifts for our birthdays so we decided to buy a bike rack for the Jeep. This purchase is timely because Jeana is doing her adventure race this weekend and needs a way to transport her bike (and her friend’s bike too) to the race.
We bought a Yakima KingPin 4 which, as you might guess from the number, carries 4 bikes. The arms fold down, as shown in the picture, if you need to park it a tight space when the rack is attached. The vertical part tilts away from the back of the Jeep so that we can still open the tail gate.
I loaded on Jeana’s bike just to see what it looks like. The bike sits much higher than I expected, and I suppose her seat would be peppered with bugs since it is raised above the top of the Jeep. The rear wheel is extending beyond the driver’s side of the Jeep because her bike has an angled tubing just below the stem of the seat.
Jeana went riding this morning (well, right now as I’m posting this) with her friend/teammate, so the rack is already being put to good use.
