Kate Girl, it’s your birthday!

I don’t know if “Katie” will ever be a nickname for our Kate, but for now, when we need her name to take two syllables, we just call her “Kate Girl.” Today is the official day, but we celebrated on Monday since Grandma and Grandpa were here. Audrey, Kate, and Grandpa were singing, ” Happy Birthday to Kate.” Grandpa paused when they got to the, “Happy Birthday dear -” part. And Audrey and Kate carried on without a break, “Kate Girl. Happy Birthday to you.” Kate is so much fun right now and always full of expression. She woke up nice and happy Monday morning. When she got to the bottom of the stairs and saw the balloons, streamers, and sign, she yelled out, “It’s my birthday!” We started out the day by playing in the back yard on their early Christmas present from Grandma and Grandpa and blowing bubbles. Audrey took this cute picture of Grandma, so I just had to include it.

Then we headed to Toys R Us to play on the toys there. Audrey gave Kate all her attention and Kate ate it up.

Dad and Grandpa were golfing all morning, so when they got home, Kate finally got to open her presents. Audrey was a great helper with the unwrapping part. Kate was very good at the “thank you” and hugging part.

Kate got clothes, books, glass slippers, a Belle baby, and a princess blanket.

For dessert, we had Dora cake and ice cream. Wow! What an awesome cake!

So, I’m feeling a bit nostalgic right, so I just watched a little video that Scott made when Kate was first born. Kate watched it with me a couple of times and she said, “Oh no! Kate’s sticking her fingers up her nose!” (right at the end). Pay no attention to the crying mom in the beginning. Who would have thought something so sweet and innocent would turn out to be such a sassy little girl?

Click the image below to watch the movie of Kate just after she was born. The movie is about 14MB so it will take some time to download. Right-click the image below and select “Save Target As…” to download the movie to your computer. Then open the downloaded copy from your computer using something like Windows Media Player.

Mount Bonnell with Grandma and Grandpa

Jeana’s parents have spent the last week with us for the Thanksgiving holiday. We took them to Mount Bonnell to show them the view of Austin from up there.

After taking a few pictures, Kate decided she needed to take a break and lie down. She leaned over on the brick wall for a couple seconds, then said, “Good Morning!” and sat up.

Camping at Oxford Ranch

Jeana and I have been wanting to go camping since we moved to Texas. I was given a new tent for father’s day which is big enough for the whole family, so all we needed was a free weekend. The planets aligned last weekend and we got some of our friends (the Birds) to come along with us.

The kids had fun exploring the cow pasture we camped in (Oxford Ranch). We got there just before dark, so they didn’t have much time to explore a whole lot. They were hungry because we got there late and the tin-foil dinners / Ramen noodles didn’t cook as fast as chicken nuggets in the microwave. Audrey fell asleep really fast once she got in the tent. Kate roamed around in the tent looking out the screen door at the adults talking around the camp fire. When we finally decided to go to bed too, I found Kate lying at Audrey’s feet where she must have just gotten tired of watching out the screen door.

The night was great, until about 12.30am. I’ll spare the reader of a play-by-play of the night, but I will say that about every hour from 12.30am Audrey woke up to say, “I’m thirsty.” The problem with this is that we put all our food and water in the back of the Jeep so that we had no problems with critters and animals trying to get it from our campsite. Neither Jeana nor I wanted to get out of the tent to go get a water bottle, so we kept telling Audrey to go back to sleep.

Finally, Jeana had reached her limit of Audrey asking, and of me not doing anything about the thirst problem and went for a water bottle at 6.30am. Five minutes later Audrey tells me, “I think I’m going to throw up!” I reacted much faster to these words that I did to “I’m thirsty.” We got out of the tent and Audrey vomited on our tarp and the ground next to the tarp. Poor Audrey. After that, she slept great.

Our intent was to camp at Enchanted Rock State Park and then go rock climbing on Saturday. The reason we camped at Oxford Ranch (i.e. the cow pasture) was because the camp sites at Enchanted Rock were all reserved and Oxford Ranch was the closest camping to the park I could find. We ate breakfast, broke camp, hit the road, and arrived at Enchanted Rock around 11am.

Enchanted Rock was nice. I’d like to go again when we can camp in the park and spend more time. By the time we got there, most of the climbing spots were occupied. We found one spot to climb on that was vacant, and realized why when I got up on the granite rock and could not find anything to hold on to! Jeana tried and was met with the same outcome. Lesson learned: reserve your camp site well in advance and camp in the park.

Halloween Festivities

Alright, we’re a little slow at getting the Halloween pictures up, but here they are. There were so many celebrations this year, that Halloween seemed like a week long holiday. Audrey went trick or treating at 4 different events and Kate went at 3.  We’ll definitely have to cut back next year.  The worst part of it is, I end up eating way too much of the candy.

The festivities started off Friday night with the Trunk or Treat at the Church.  Audrey and Kate were fairies.  They believe they were Tinkerbell and as long as they believe it, that’s all that matters right?

On Saturday, we had a shin dig at our house.  No candy this time, but there was a cake walk for the kids, and a fort in the back yard made of card board boxes.  What more could you ask for?

Monday night was dedicated to carving pumpkins.  At first we had to bribe the girls just to stick their hands in the pumpkin, but they got much braver by the end.

On Tuesday, Audrey’s preschool dressed up in their costumes and went around to different rooms and offices trick or treating.  I was hiding in one of the rooms with candy for the kids and Audrey was so excited when they came trick or treating to my door.  Then, on Wednesday there was this thing (almost like a carnival) at a park in Round Rock with candy, games, candy, baloons, candy, a fire truck, and more.  So they loaded up there too.  As you can see, Kate was a big fan of the fire truck.

Wednesday night we got together with some friends for cheese and broccoli soup and trick or treating.  It was around 80 degrees by the way.  We’ll have to come up with a more suitable Halloween meal for Texas living.  Scott was awesome herding the kids to all the doors, so I could just stand back and watch.
