Mesa Verde

The cliff dwellingsHiking to the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde

We decided to make an impromptu stop at Mesa Verde national park on our way through Colorado this year. The day was hot and long, but I am glad we did it!

The cliff dwellings were really awesome – they were 60 feet deep looking back into the cave! And the hole thingies (I can’t remember what they were called) were really deep too.

The “hole thingies” were a place where the dwellers would pray for rain, so Jeana told Audrey and Kate to pray for rain while they were down in there.

After a long day of walking around in the dusty cliff, you can only imagine how gross and nasty feet and flip-flops could become.

State Lines 2009

New Mexico 2009

Simon was such a good boy in the car. Of course, he cried. What baby doesn’t cry? However, he was very well behaved and content most of the time. By the end of the second day of driving, even I was pretty grumpy.

Colorado 2009

We had a hard time stopping at every state line because either Kate or Simon would be asleep. Having either of them asleep in the car was like gold so we felt that we didn’t need a picture at every sign.

New car

After 7 1/2 years, we parted with a dear friend. Our friend never had a name, but took us on many vacations and adventures. I will miss the V8 engine with 250+ horsepower and a rugged body able to haul a kayak and mountain bikes.

But, families grow, and cars don’t. Such is life. We have replaced the Jeep with a van formerly known as Linda – Linda Love. I’m not sure the name will carry on with us as the owner because our cars just don’t have names. I realized that I don’t have a picture of the exterior, but here are a few of our trip after the purchase.

One of the best features of the van is that the DVD system for the passengers can be separate from the rest of the sound system in the front. This means that Jeana and I don’t have to listen to all the princess movies for 23 hours of driving. Instead, we give the girls the headphones in the back, then we enjoy Harry Potter in the front.

Jeana quickly learned one bad thing about the van – she just can’t turn around to give the kids everything they demand. In the van, she had to unbuckle her seat belt and walk back and forth at least 10 times before she had finally lost her patience with that process.

Ah, what every road trip should have

I fear for Kate’s teenage years. She likes the volume cranked on her headphones. I guess I better start tolerating music of the younger generations now so that I’m not an ornery old dad in 10 years.

Take Our Children to Work Day 2009

Every year, IBM has a “Take Our Children to Work Day”. Audrey and Kate have been looking forward to another event this year for months. For them, it means sitting in my office and playing on one of the 40 computers (actually 5) in my office.

Working hard...or hardly workingWaiting for an elevator

We load up their backbacks with books, coloring/drawing devices, and small toys. Then, they are allowed to entertain themselves for as long as I need to work. I don’t think they even pulled out their books this year because they got too busy on webkinz.com or pbskids.org.

Riding the elevator

IBM plans activities for the kids. This year we got some popcorn (with their friends Megan and Lauren), made some glittery artwork, and met some police officers. The fire department sent a “Fire Safety House” for the kids to experience. The “house” was a small trailer mock-home with a fog machine. The kids crawled through it like it was a house full of smoke, then could go down a slide to exit the house. When Kate poked her head out to go down the slide she was crying. She had lost one of her flip-flops in the smokey house somewhere. Luckily, the firefighter went in to find it for her since she was too scared to go back in.

Leaving the officeKate - worn out

We avoided the hot dog lunch in the cafeteria and enjoyed peanut butter sandwiches and fruit in my office. After lunch, Audrey and Kate watched “Dora the Explorer” episodes on my computer while I tried to get some work done.

I had a hard time working this day – not because the kids were there, but because the next day we were leaving town for vacation. I think my mind had checked out two days earlier from work!
