Snow Day!

the three kids

It snowed today! In Texas! And it actually stuck. Audrey got out of school early – which was just kind of funny to Scott and me. This just seemed like a typical July day for Rexburg, Idaho. Maybe that’s a little bit of an exaggeration – a typical May day.

Before Audrey got home, the rest of us were driving past a drainage pool and noticed the mail lady’s truck pulled up onto the side walk. I started looking around for her and noticed her walking along the edge with a lid to one of her mail bins and then I realized what she was doing. I watched her just long enough to see her sit down on the lid like it was a sled, but she was out of view before we could see her go down the hill. I guess snow in Texas brings out the kid in all of us, although, there really wasn’t enough snow to have any success sledding.

When Audrey got home, we had some fun playing in the snow. Audrey and Kate decided that Simon liked being in the snow so they started walking with him but kept getting faster and faster. Right after I took this picture, he went down to his knees and they just kept pulling him.  He was soaked.

Dragged along Snowball Fight

Audrey had this idea in her head that a snowball fight would be so much fun, but this snow was really, really, wet and heavy.  Needless to say, the snowball fight was more fun in theory than in reality.

By the time we got around to building our snow girl, a lot of the snow had melted, so she was quite miniature… but still cute.

Our snow girl Snow girl + scarf

Our snow girl kept getting make overs: nose jobs, scarf changed to hula skirt. Audrey was an artist at work.

Simon’s 1!

It has been one happy year having Simon in our family. He is the smiliest boy in the world and his happiness is contagious.

clap happy

The past year has flown by. In the morning, Kate said, “Simon’s one!  And pretty soon he’ll be two.”  I said, “Well, in a year, he’ll be two.”  Then Kate said, “And then, three. And then, four.” And then I got a little sad because I realized it is going to go about that fast. Even though I’m in no hurry for him to grow up, it is so fun to watch all the new things he can do.  It’s fun to communicate with him when he signs, “milk,” “all done,” “more,” “please,” and “thank you,” and when he vocalizes, “Mama.”  It’s fun to see him feed himself or stand on his own for long periods of time.  It’s fun to see him climb up the stairs and hear him yell for me in the middle since he can’t come back down on his own yet.  It’s not so fun to hear him tumble down the stairs though. And especially not fun to hear the explanation of why he tumbled down the stairs: that his sister was worried he was going to get the “chokable poly pockets” she was playing with at the top of the stairs, and in order to protect him from the chokables, gave him a little push.

Back to the birthday.  Simon was a big fan of his presents. It seems like the presents that Scott and I give to our kids don’t always get the reaction we hope for.  Well, this year, we hit the jackpot.  Simon absolutely loved his six-pack of socks.  He had a blast with those.  He even cried when I put them away. He had some fun with his boat, cars, book, and animals on wheels too.

opening presents the loot

And now, presenting the cake. I really do think this may be the cutest cake I have ever made.  I learned lots of lessons of how to make it work better next time, but still, I’m pretty proud of it.

The cake Blowing out the candle

With a little help from the sisters, the candle was blown out and then Simon went down on that caboose!

Taste test Shoving it down

In the midst of the eating, Grandma Jean and Grandpa Gramps called to wish him a happy birthday.  I did my best to keep the phone clean by switching it from side to side when he reached for it, but there was frosting EVERY WHERE! It was impossible to avoid. The combination of hearing Grandma and Grandpa sing and seeing me switching the phone all around had Simon laughing pretty hard.

Such a mess! the phone call

We love our little Simon!
