Sweet Baby Jane

Jeana and I checked into the hospital Monday morning, August 29th, anxiously anticipating the arrival of our baby girl. During the morning hours we played some games to pass the time until the contractions became strong enough for Jeana that I began dominating a game that I normally lose. Jane’s arrival came with some drama and scare, but in the end everything worked out fine.

Jeana’s parents came to town to help take care of kids while we were in the hospital. From what we hear, Simon was respectful of their napping.

One of our family traditions is that the older children bring gifts to the baby, and the older kids receive a gift from the new baby. Jane gave Audrey and Kate some sticker books and she gave Simon a Cars 2 sticker book (well played Jane, Simon loved it). Audrey and Kate made some burp cloths and I think Simon piggy-backed on the gift.

Audrey was really cute when both Kate and Simon were born. Kate was excited to be a big sister when Simon was born. I had no doubts Audrey and Kate would do well with their new sister. Simon, on the other hand, is at that “loose cannon” age where you can’t predict much. Add to that the fact that he’s a boy, and you can start to imagine the trepidation of placing a newborn in his arms.

To my surprise, Simon was so gentle and soft with baby Jane. I think he sensed the sacred nature of his newborn, baby sister. One evidence of his concern for her is found at prayer-times. When he says our family prayer and forgets to ask Heavenly Father to bless baby Jane, he puts on a really sad face and says, “Pray baby Jane!” He insists on saying a follow-up prayer just for baby Jane.

It has been a few days now since Jane was born. A couple people have told us how the transition from 3 children to 4 was difficult. I’m starting to realize some truth to that statement. I wish I could have another week off of work to make it easier!

Welcome to the family sweet baby Jane!

Audrey’s 8!!!

Audrey’s birthday was pretty low key. It ended up being a really nice day so we decided to hike the up to the Y mountain by BYU.

Audrey got a new camera for her birthday so she brought that along. Kate didn’t want to be left out so she brought our old camera and they turned into quite the photographers.

Simon spent the first half of the hike in the lead. His little legs were taking three or four steps to one of ours, but he did awesome. Scott ended up carrying him on his shoulders most of the way back down.

Later on we went out to dinner at Olive Garden and when the server offered to bring Audrey some birthday cake, she declined, telling them we had cheesecake at home. I guess we need to teach her the concept of doggie bags.

Happy Birthday Audrey!

Simers turns 2

Simon had a birthday recently and turned 2. Right now he’s really into cars, Cars the movie (and naturally, the characters of that movie), and Thomas the train. We focused presents on those things because we knew they’d be a sure win.

He got some Thomas the train underwear for that day some time in the future when toilet training will happen. He also got (later) a potty seat with Lightning McQueen on it that has a lever on the side that when pulled triggers a revving engine sound.

Aunt Danielle came to visit and Grandma Jeana and Grandpa Gramps came down have cake and ice cream. Jeana and Danielle made a really cool cake of Lightning McQueen.

I think Simon enjoyed driving the car across his high chair tray than eating it. The car’s shape was made as a rice krispie treat. Simon wasn’t so sure about eating it, but once we told him it was a cookie he ate up.

Simon LOVED his new cars – the characters from the Cars movie. He was keen on keeping them in a straight line, maybe trying to copy the later scenes of the movie when the cars cruise down the main street of Radiator Springs.

Kate’s 5th Birthday

Three days after we got here, Kate had her fifth birthday!  When she first woke up, she got to open some roller skates for Hello Kitty.  You can see Simon was a bit upset to see Kate playing with her own toy instead of handing it over to him… so after some bawling, she did hand it over to him.

Kate, Simon and I went to the awesome dinosaur museum at Thanksgiving Point.  We invited Audrey to come with us and put off her first day of school, but she was just ready to jump right into things here.  Who does that?  Go to school, when your mom is giving you a very valid excuse not to go?

Kate kept those gloves on the whole time.  I don’t know she was cold or if it was part of the protective clothing for excavating.

This museum was so fun.  It had tons of hands on stuff and since it cost as much as college tuition, we decided to go through it twice to get a full education from it.

Kate kind of got jipped on the whole birthday cake thing.  Since we had just moved and didn’t have any of our stuff yet, we had nothing to make a cake with, so I bought sugar cookies instead.  I did throw some of our birthday decorations into a bag before we left, so I put a candle in the cookie, but we had no match to light it, so she just pretended to blow it out.

In our defense, she did have a rockin’ party before we left Texas with lots of our friends.  It was outside at a park with the most beautiful weather possible.

This isn’t Kate hitting the piñata; it’s her friend Summer.  Sadly I didn’t get a picture of Kate hitting it, but she did hit it.  Audrey, however was a different story.  This was the second piñata within about a month, that she didn’t get the chance to hit.  Maybe I’ll get her her own some day… like on her birthday.

Happy very late birthday, Kate!  Love you girlie!

Canoeing Adventure

On the day before my birthday, we decided to go down to Lady Bird Lake to go canoeing.

Right as we pulled into the parking lot, we noticed Blair and Wendy pulling in behind us, so we all ended up going together.  It was a good thing they were there because we found out that we could only have two kids in our boat.  So, Kate rode with them at the beginning for a little while and then Audrey did at the end.

Simon started out brave and standing, but by the end was whining and burying his head in my lap.

Audrey started out scared and cautious, but by the end she was brave enough to stand up.

And Kate was just a delight the whole time out there.  She really was so stinkin’ fun and cute and helped Audrey (her older sister) to be a little braver.

We had so much fun looking at all the turtles on the lake.  There were tons of them all lined up on the logs.

After our canoeing adventure, we all went to Flip Happy for some delicious crepes.
