Oh, I love my pretty little garden!

Can you name what that is from?  I really can’t remember, so remind me Danielle or Brad.

Last year I planted artichokes and didn’t get anything at all from the plants.  I thought about ripping them out since they were taking up so much space, but Brad told me that they don’t produce until the second year.  So, I held off.  I’m so glad I did.  We’ve already eaten about nine of them in the past month.  Audrey and Kate love them.

My gardens are doing awesome this year.  I’m quite impressed with them since they were all planted after Simon was born.

Garden A has edamame, onions, carrots, lettuce, and New Zealand spinach.

Garden B has green onions, broccoli, artichokes and tomatoes.

Garden C has some of the same stuff as the other gardens, plus cucumbers, zucchini, and acorn squash.

Audrey’s 5!

Audrey’s birthday was so fun.  We started out the day with breakfast and opening presents from the family. Kate’s was first and was the biggest hit. If you’ll notice, Kate’s eyes are closed in the picture.  They are used to closing their eyes while they wait for surprises.  She got Audrey an Ariel umbrella and right after Audrey opened it, Kate grabbed it and said, “Thank you!” in her sweetest voice.  Apparently she’s a little confused on the ”from” vs. the ”for.”

Later in the morning, Audrey had some friends come over for her “Garden Party.”  I know a garden party for a five year old sounds a little nerdy, but let me explain:  For the past six months Audrey has been deciding what kind of cake she was going to have for her birthday and none of them sounded easy.  She would usually ask for things like, Sleeping Beauty or other princesses or Tinkerbell.  Anyway, one day  we were working in the garden and she asked me if I was a gardener and I said, “yes.”  Then, she asked if she was a gardener and I said, “You helped plant the seeds so that makes you a gardener.” Then, she said, “I want a garden cake for my birthday.”  Thinking about how easy a garden cake would be in comparison to Tinkerbell, I encouraged this idea as much as possible.  So, she had a garden themed birthday.

When Danielle was here, she painted a poster for the kids to play, “Pin the shovel on the gardener.”  Audrey and Kate rocked at this game.  They then played a relay game where they filled up buckets with plastic fruits and veggies.  All the kids ran their hearts out in this game.  They were troopers in the heat. We also had a strawberry piñata that luckily everyone got to hit before it broke.

And of course… the cake.  Last year Audrey was a little candle shy, so Ocean helped her blow the candles out.  This year we encouraged them both to have it be a one person effort and they both did great!

Audrey also got a little kiddie pool for the back yard, so later in the afternoon, she and Kate had some fun in the sun!

How does your garden grow?

This is for Magan.  She asked me to put pictures of my garden on our blog and since I love my garden and talking about it and showing it off, here it is:

 Garden A.JPG

In “Garden A,” we’re growing corn (which has not been successful in the past – so we’ll keep our fingers crossed), green onions, carrots, bell peppers, and eggplant!

Garden B.JPG

In “Garden B” we’re growing tomatoes, artichokes (an experiment), New Zealand Spinach (normal spinach doesn’t do so well in Texas),  and soy beans.  We’ve never grown soy beans (or “poppy beans” as we like to call them) before, but they are doing great so far and our family loves them.  Maybe if they work out well enough, we’ll plant enough next time to manufacture our own soy milk, since cow’s milk is over $4 a gallon!

Garden C

And in “Garden C,” we’re growing cantelope, watermelon, cucumbers, squash, onions, and romaine lettuce.

I’m also growing some herbs in a separate pot: oregano, basil, parsley, and rosemary.

And…that’s how my garden grows.

p.s. Scott commented that you can’t tell how much I love gardening from this post, so I’m adding more.  I LOVE IT!   The method I use is called Square Foot Gardening.   There is virtually no weeding, hardly any thinning, and it’s all so easy to reach. When I was little I really wasn’t excited about gardening.  We had a huge part of our side lawn that was full of rows of raspberries that we had to bundle up (remember, this was Rexburg, Idaho) early in the morning and go out to pick, getting all scratched up along the way.  Then, when I was a little older, we had a garden (almost as big as my back yard now) that was full of corn.  At the end of the summer we would spend a whole day picking, shucking, washing, boiling, cutting, and freezing the corn.  We had another garden the same size full of all the other usual vegetables.  There was constant weeding to do.  I like my gardening much more now!

When we’re helping, we’re happy

Today Suzanne called me to see if I wanted to go walking and I instead convinced her to go get some free mulch with me. We loaded up the kids and a bunch of bags and headed to the church (our church got a bunch of mulch to put around the trees and they had a lot left over so they asked people to take it). Anyway, we got to the church and shoveled 4 bags full of mulch while the kids went crazy until we finally got them out to play. We went back to Suzanne’s and spread the mulch around her trees and in her flower bed and used all of the mulch up. It was noon by this time so we made the kids some sandwiches jumped back in the car and headed back to the church to fill up 5 more bags. It was a fun and tiresome adventure. Suzanne got a sunburn (it was 89 degrees here today) and Lucas puked up bark. But overall it was a fun and productive morning. The kids were such troopers. Even before we started the whole mulch excursion, Audrey and Kate helped me weed our flower beds. Then, Audrey helped weed at Suzanne’s and spread the mulch and then helped spread the mulch at our house too. This a huge improvement from last year when she wouldn’t do any outside work because she didn’t want to get her fingers dirty. I kept telling her what a good job she was doing and I said, “It’s kind of fun to work together, huh?” She said, “Yeah. Is that why you had kids?” I totally remember thinking that when I was younger – that the reason my parents had kids was for us to do all the work (I was in high school at the time, so she figured it out much sooner than I did).

Summer Fun

Jaden, our neighbor, came over with her friend Leah, and helped water our flowers in the front yard for about an hour. We only had one watering can so plastic cups were used instead. Cute kids.

Jeana and Audrey got new flip-flops for Mother’s Day. They were a present from Audrey. Audrey did really good to keep a secret – or so I thought. Jeana told me after the fact the Audrey slipped and told Jeana that she (Audrey) got some new sandals, but that it was a surprise for Mother’s Day.

Jeana order some garden dividers from the square-foot gardening folks in Utah. It’s a shame that the peas didn’t survive for this growing season – I really love peas from the garden. Tomatoes seem to grow well here, until Kate picks them prematurely. Our carrots are growing well, and we noticed Friday that a cucumber is actually growing!
