Practice makes… cookies

Audrey and Kate started up piano lessons again today and Scott came up with this great incentive to get them to practice in preparation for these lessons.  We now have a practice jar.

Every time either one of them practice piano, or when Audrey practices violin,  they get to put in a spoonful of M&M’s.  So, after the first full jar, we made cookies.

Yes.  Simon is in great need of a more manly apron.

After the second full jar (of marshmallows instead of M&M’s) we made rice crispy treats.  And now we’re ready for M&M cookies again.  I don’t know what we’ll make next yet.  Audrey has requested  something healthy.  She and Scott are on a no sugar kick after they both had several cavities filled at the dentist this week.

Strings

Back in August, we found out that Audrey got into UT Strings Project. It’s this awesome program where she got to have private lessons, and ensemble classes each week to learn the violin. She got one semester in before we moved, so she didn’t get really far, but it was a lot of fun.

Her violin is so tiny and cute.  It looks like a toy.

Sadly we moved before the concert, but here she is performing in the dress rehearsal.

Kate the Karacter

My family recently had a weekend reunion and one of the activities on the agenda was a sing-along out in the mountains of Idaho. Since we couldn’t be there (and I typically provide the guitar accompaniment) my sister asked me to record some songs that could be used in our absence.

The result was 4 subtitled videos that were projected up on the exterior wall of a cabin for a family of about 25 people to sing along to. I picked songs that I figured most of the grandchildren (my nieces and nephews) would know and actually sing along to. That was easy because I have a few songs that I play all the time that our kids dance and jam to.

What I did NOT expect was the comedic relief of Kate to come out in the filming. I was cracking up when I was making the final edits of the movies, and when I showed Jeana, we were rolling with laughter. There are some clips that must not go unnoticed, and to that end I have produced a quick sequence of the highlights for your viewing pleasure.

One thing I didn’t notice until just barely was the part when Audrey jumps off the chair and doesn’t make the landing. That’s about the only subtle part of the sequence.

Accompanying

Accompanying. That’s a hard word to say.

This is an exciting time in my life. Audrey can now accompany Kate singing a primary song which they have been learning in primary. I love hearing music being made in our home.

My big sister and I spent many hours singing at the piano together. I am so excited that it is starting so early for Audrey and Kate.

Right Field

Last Saturday night, I played in a talent show for our stake. I played a song by Peter, Paul, and Mary (called Right Field) that I learned a long time ago. If you’ve seen the recent film “Meet the Robinsons” and you are familiar with Goob, then this song will really make sense.

I also played for a trio act covering a song as recorded by Nanci Griffith, Across the Great Divide.

After I watched the recordings I had a lot of thoughts, like “wow, am I really that bald!” Or, “My head really does bob around like a chicken – just like Jeana says.” I’ll stop there. Except – that I should say that I miss performing, whether it be on a bench on a street corner, or on stage with a 1000 watt amplifier.
