Slacklining

For Jeana’s family, we were supposed to come up with an activity for all the kids one day. Well, we setup the slackline in the back yard, and it was a magnet for all the kids – they loved it. Some of them got the hang of it rather quickly while others needed help.

Being the show-off that I am, and being around a number of others who were able to slackline, I tried to raise the bar and do some tricks. Pictured above you can see that you can do yoga on the slackline. Doing the Tree pose actually took me a long time to get my balance. I also tried a jumping 360 degree turn. I landed it once and took a quick step. Later on our trip, we setup the slackline in the mountains and I landed a 360 again.

My Birthday

I had a birthday this year. I’m sure that’s a surprise to most people. What’s more birthday than doing what you want to on your big day! I decided to play the piano with a Firehouse Subs hat. Ok, I didn’t chose the hat part myself. It was forced on me by silly little girls.

Simers helped me blow out the candles on my carrot cake. By the way, if you haven’t had Jeana’s carrot cake, you really need to make a request. Chances are that I’d get some too.

We haven’t been slacklining in a while, so after dinner we headed to the park. You can tell by the look in Kate’s eyes that she felt safe on the slackline. If anyone is the queen of funny faces, Kate is.

Audrey is really into making her own books and journals. For my birthday she folded up a piece of paper, wrote “Scott” on the front, and decorated it with flowers, a cloud, and the sun. I think this was the most exciting present to her. I liked it a lot. However, I liked the big box of gold fish crackers more which the kids gave me.

Jeana got me tickets to see Wicked in August. Actually, I got them for her birthday (which is 12 days after mine) but she hijacked the gift. Jeana also got me a new cyclometer for my bike since mine broke recently (and since she ran over hers – they’re identical models so we can share it). The funny part is that I took the girls shopping for the exact same cyclometer for Jeana’s birthday. I’m glad I didn’t buy it for her now. A whole month has passed since my birthday and I haven’t installed the new cyclometer yet. However, Jeana has put it to good use on her bike. My turn will come this weekend.

Jeana and I have recently become fans of pandora.com. I discovered a really cool song by Jason Mraz that I wanted, and the iTunes gift card from Jeana was quickly used to purchase the new song!

Thanks everyone for an awesome birthday!

Jeana in Texas Round-up

Jeana ran the Texas Round-up 10k this morning and ran better than she ever has before. The girls and I were waiting at the finish line watching for her. Kate was on my shoulders, and I was helping Audrey balance on the fence. Minutes before we saw Jeana, Kate decided she wanted to fold in half and do a nose-dive toward the sidewalk. Somehow I managed to catch her without Audrey falling off the fence and get back up in time to see Jeana turn the last corner of the race.

There’s something mysterious about Jeana and Jamie registering for a race. The night before the race is always stormy and some races, or portions of races have been canceled in the past. Last night was no different. We knelt at our closet window watching the rain and thunderstorm because it was chucking buckets outside. The whole sky was constantly lit up by lightning. I was skeptical the race would happen this morning, but of course I didn’t vocalize my skepticism in order to not dampen the pre-race spirits. When we woke up today, the roads and sidewalks were dry, there was no wind, and the temperature was great!

Kate got to participate in her first race with bib 5596. Audrey now has her second bib, number 5597 (she now has as many as me). The family walk/mile started up by the capitol and went down hill for a half-mile, then we turned around and climbed back up the hill. Luckily, I was with Kate, and had her on my shoulders for three-fourths of the mile. She ran the first block by herself – I was so proud. Then the whining began. For an incentive I offered a fruit snack, singular. Bad idea. Not letting her hold the bag of snacks resulted in a meltdown on the side of the road (yes, she’s still two years old), but we recovered when I gave her the bag and put her on my shoulders. The only negative effects of that action were an occasional fruit snack falling down my sweaty back.

Audrey and Kate loved getting their medals. Jeana and I were talking today about how exciting it is to involve the girls in events like races. I hope we’ll have many more days like today – we got to spend the whole day together as a family with no other obligations taking us away from each other. We went up to Firehouse Subs for lunch (a new favorite dining establishment) and went slacklining after Kate’s nap.

Camping at Lake Somerville

We went camping a couple weeks ago with Jeff and Brenna and Adam and Jamie. This camping trip was much better than our last outing. We had great weather, and there were two trees in our campsite that made for some excellent slacklining. The slacklining was setup all evening long, and we set it up again Saturday morning. Jeana nailed the slackline for the first time ever, that is, she got up on and walked all the way across the slackline with no assistance! We were all so proud. Adam also got across the slackline, and Jamie was really close.

We took a walk down by the lake so the kids could touch the dirty water. Jeana wanted the kids all looking at the water together with their backs facing us. This was as close as we got them to posing.

Jeana is determined to take a picture of the girls sleeping on every campout. On the first attempt, Kate wasn’t quite asleep.

We took our bikes and the Burley so that we could go for a ride on Saturday morning. Jeana showed how tough she is by pulling the girls the whole time up and down some big hills. Note that in this picture Jeana is riding her old friend, the green GT Timberline. Since then, Jeana has craglisted that bike and purchased a new one. Pictures of the new bike will be posted soon.

Slacklining

Our friends, Greg and Missy Stebbing, introduced us to a really fun and addictive sport called slacklining. Jeana got me some gear for a Christmas present and I was really anxious to get out and have a go. We went to a local park and setup the line between two trees located right next to a playground (to help occupy the kids). The line was a bit too short, but was still a challenge.

The day after we tried this, we went rock climbing, and setup a longer slackline. This line was a bit higher and more difficult to get up on. Now I find myself driving down the road scoping out possible slackline locations.
