Snow Day!

the three kids

It snowed today! In Texas! And it actually stuck. Audrey got out of school early – which was just kind of funny to Scott and me. This just seemed like a typical July day for Rexburg, Idaho. Maybe that’s a little bit of an exaggeration – a typical May day.

Before Audrey got home, the rest of us were driving past a drainage pool and noticed the mail lady’s truck pulled up onto the side walk. I started looking around for her and noticed her walking along the edge with a lid to one of her mail bins and then I realized what she was doing. I watched her just long enough to see her sit down on the lid like it was a sled, but she was out of view before we could see her go down the hill. I guess snow in Texas brings out the kid in all of us, although, there really wasn’t enough snow to have any success sledding.

When Audrey got home, we had some fun playing in the snow. Audrey and Kate decided that Simon liked being in the snow so they started walking with him but kept getting faster and faster. Right after I took this picture, he went down to his knees and they just kept pulling him.  He was soaked.

Dragged along Snowball Fight

Audrey had this idea in her head that a snowball fight would be so much fun, but this snow was really, really, wet and heavy.  Needless to say, the snowball fight was more fun in theory than in reality.

By the time we got around to building our snow girl, a lot of the snow had melted, so she was quite miniature… but still cute.

Our snow girl kept getting make overs: nose jobs, scarf changed to hula skirt. Audrey was an artist at work.

The Colors of the Rainbow, So Pretty in the Sky

Jeana took this picture yesterday at lunch. I guess with boys you get them wearing underwear on their heads. With girls, you get tights. Maybe she was trying to be like the dog in the song “Do your ears hang low?” The real unknown is: Kate’s face is expressing a) humor and delight at the silliness of her sister, or b) anxiety and frustration because she’s strapped into her chair.

The weather continues to be odd in Austin-rain, rain, and [you guessed it,] rain. Each time the TV is on, I feel like there is a flash flood watch message scrolling across the bottom of the screen. I was coming home from scouts tonight and saw a rainbow appearing dimly in the north eastern sky. The sunset was a strong orange against the storm clouds in the west. Pretty soon, the rainbow was really bright and I could see it start and end. By the time I got home, a second rainbow had appeared also. The girls were excited to be outside, although Kate was unsure what to look for in the sky. After a few minutes she said, “luhlo” (i.e. color) when she realized there were colors in the sky. Once she recognized the colors, she started saying rainbow along with us.

We prefer not to encourage our kids to kiss on the lips, but Eskimo kisses are acceptable. We call these “noses” in our house. We also do “eyes” in our family, which are butterfly kisses with your eyelashes.  I was trying to get Kate to do them with me but she got a little giggly.
